National Consumer Protection Week is the perfect time to remind ourselves about the importance of staying safe from scams. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using technology like deceptive text messages to trick unsuspecting individuals. A recent example includes text messages about owing tolls. It’s crucial to be vigilant and informed.
- Report scams immediately: If you or someone you know falls victim to a scam, report it to the Commerce Department or the Division of Consumer Protection at dcp.utah.gov.
- Seniors are often targets: Due to their potential unfamiliarity with new technologies, seniors can be particularly vulnerable to AI scams. This is why the Utah Department of Commerce is adding a new character to our Knights of Scamalot campaign. Her name is Queen Trustworth, and she will help keep seniors informed about scams targeting them.
- Everyone is at risk: It’s important to remember that everyone is susceptible to scams, and scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
- Red flags and verification: To avoid scams, verify information and avoid giving personal information to unverified sources. It’s okay to say no, pause, research, and seek advice from a trusted friend.
Visit Scams.Utah.gov for information on how to protect yourself from scams. You can report a scam at dcp.utah.gov.
