Salt Lake City, UT—Today, the Public Service Commission issued an order that approved a general rate increase for Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) of $87.2 million, which marks a significant reduction of $243 million from the utility’s final request. RMP sought $330.2 million, a decrease from its original ask of $667 million. The advocacy of Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Public Utilities (DPU) and the Office of Consumer Services (OCS) will result in many millions of savings for Utah ratepayers, who diligently represented the interests of Utah ratepayers before the Commission. Their efforts helped not only to minimize the cost increases but also to promote more effective incentives for efficient utility management.
“The Public Service Commission’s order is a significant step toward ensuring that Utahns have fair utility rates while allowing Rocky Mountain Power to make necessary investments in infrastructure and wildfire risk mitigation,” said Margaret Woolley Busse, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Commerce “It’s vital that we balance the needs of our utility providers with the interests of consumers, and this order does just that.”
Division of Public Utilities director Chris Parker echoed Busse’s sentiments, stating, “The Commission’s thorough and thoughtful approach treats customers fairly and will engender greater trust in the utility.”
Office of Consumer Services director Michele Beck said, “We will continue working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure that rate increases reflect just and reasonable rates for all customers and do not disproportionately impact our most vulnerable customers.”
DPU and OCS remain committed to championing adequate and reliable service at fair rates, steadfastly advocating for the public interest, and for residential and small commercial customers.
